Price and calculator update: September 17, 2026. Our official iPhone price catalog contains 117 model/storage/market records across nine markets for iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. Each record links to its Apple store source and identifies its check date, purchase-tax treatment and availability status. Download the dated catalog as CSV. These prices are snapshots, not a live feed or verified tourist-refund offers.
Quick answer: An iPhone does not automatically qualify for a tourist tax refund. Confirm the store, country and your eligibility first. Then use the net refund after fees—not the headline tax rate—as the saving in your calculation.
Does Apple offer the same VAT refund in every country?
No universal refund can be inferred from the Apple brand. For example, Apple UK’s payment guidance says it cannot refund VAT on UK purchases and that its online store does not participate in the Retail Export Scheme. This is a UK-specific statement; it is not a rule for every Apple store worldwide. Check the regional policy and the actual seller before paying.
What should I enter in the calculator?
- Price: select a model and storage to load a dated Apple offer in the quick calculator, or enter your own quote. In the detailed calculator, match the tax-included switch to that quote.
- Tax rate: the applicable rate, used to identify the tax component.
- Net refund: use the amount the seller or operator confirms after fees. The quick calculator’s optional full-tax illustration is a best-case estimate before fees, not a confirmed refund. Leave that option off for the no-refund comparison, or enter the store’s net quote.
- Other costs: card charges, import or registration, and extra travel in the appropriate currency.
Calculate your iPhone cost with and without a refund, or try the fictional worked example below. A calculator result does not establish eligibility.
Editorial update: September 17, 2026. Apple UK payment guidance checked on this date. The original mathematical and country-guidance source check below remains separately dated.
Original country-guidance source check: September 7, 2026. Rules and store offers can change. The dated price-catalog update is separate from this earlier source check; illustrative calculations are not store offers.
VAT rate and refund percentage are different
A tax-inclusive price already contains both the net value and the tax. To extract the tax, use gross price × tax rate ÷ (100 + tax rate). Multiplying the gross price by the tax rate overstates the embedded tax.
A worked example, not a country quote
Assume a fictional phone costs 1,200 currency units including 20% VAT. Its net price is 1,000 and the tax component is 200, not 240. If a refund operator quotes 160 after fees, your expected purchase cost is 1,040 before currency conversion and other charges. None of these figures is a current Apple offer or a promised national refund.
What must happen before you count a refund?
Ask the actual store whether the purchase and your residency qualify, what paperwork it issues, what export validation is needed and how much you will receive after deductions. The European Commission’s tourist-refund guidance covers residence outside the EU, taking goods out within three months, national minimum purchase values and potential handling fees. Procedures are not identical across countries.
Calculate the payment cost separately
Your card may charge a conversion fee on the full checkout payment. A later refund may use a different exchange rate and may not reverse the original fee. The quick calculator loads a daily reference exchange rate; your bank’s rate can differ. The detailed calculator uses the exchange rate you enter and keeps the card fee on the gross payment. Both use one rate for estimation rather than predicting the separate rate on a later refund. Use your bank’s actual conditions if they differ.
Keep the downside visible
For the hypothetical phone above, the no-refund purchase cost remains 1,200 before other charges. Budget for that cash outflow. The eventual saving is not confirmed until the refund is received and all destination costs are included.
Open the iPhone tax-free total-cost calculator and compare your expected total with the no-refund total. Review the country checklist before assuming the same refund system exists everywhere.
