What changes on November 1?
Japanโs National Tax Agency explains the new refund method: from November 1, 2026, eligible purchases are paid tax-inclusive. The traveller must obtain customs confirmation that the goods are leaving Japan within 90 days of purchase. The shop operator refunds the tax equivalent after that confirmation.
Why this matters for a new iPhone
A launch-period purchase and a later autumn purchase may fall on different sides of the change. Use the actual purchase date. Do not apply a guide for the new scheme to an earlier transaction, or assume an older checkout-discount description applies after the change.
Confirm the exact retailer
A national tourist-shopping framework does not establish that every Apple store, reseller, online order or device qualifies. Before paying, ask the seller to confirm participation, your eligibility and the transaction documents. A generic โtax freeโ sign is not a final net-refund quote for your phone.
Plan cash flow as well as final cost
For purchases under the new method, prepare for the gross payment first. The expected refund is a later cash flow. Keep enough budget for the no-refund case, and check whether your refund method involves separate currency conversion or processing deductions.
Before departure
Keep the invoice and purchase record accessible, understand where validation takes place, and confirm what goods and documents must be presented before checking luggage. Match the procedure to your itinerary rather than assuming a connection at another airport solves it.
The total-cost calculator accepts a quoted net refund and displays the no-refund total. For use in Turkey, also read the IMEI and destination-cost checklist. This page does not claim a verified current Japanese price for the next iPhone.
